SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 45

Helmick, Dugan and Snyder)
Expressing sadness at the passing the Honorable Vernon C. Whitacre,
former member of the Senate of West Virginia, farmer, educator
and distinguished West Virginian.
Whereas, The Honorable Vernon C. Whitacre was born November
22, 1909, in Frederick County, Virginia, the son of Boyd U. and
Bessie P. Whitacre; and
Whereas, The Honorable Vernon C. Whitacre received his
education from Capon Bridge High School and Shepherd College; and
Whereas, The Honorable Vernon C. Whitacre married his beloved
wife Madeline (Anderson) Whitacre, with whom he shared the joy of
having one daughter, Shelva Jean Switzer, and one step-daughter
Betty Larrick; and
Whereas, The long life of the Honorable Vernon C. Whitacre was
filled with varied interest, all of which he mastered. He was an
educator from 1931 to 1941 and an employee of the West Virginia
State Tax Department from 1941 to 1957. He served as a federal
land commissioner and was a licensed land surveyor. He was a
farmer and a member of the farm bureau. He was also involved in
real estate and auctioneering; and
Whereas on December 15, 1982, the Honorable Vernon C. Whitacre was appointed to the Senate of West Virginia, representing the
sixteenth senatorial district. He was elected to the Senate in
1984; and
Whereas, During his tenure in the Senate, the Honorable Vernon
C. Whitacre served as chairman of the Committee on Natural
Resources and a Select Committee on Flood Recovery. He was also a
member of the committees on Agriculture, Banking and Insurance,
Finance and Military; and
Whereas, The legislative service of the late Honorable Vernon
C. Whitacre is evidenced by a myriad of enactments which benefited
all the citizens of West Virginia; and
Whereas, Sadly, on April 17, 1997, the Honorable Vernon C.
Whitacre passed away, leaving behind a loving family and many
friends; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby expresses its sincere sadness at the
passing of the Honorable Vernon C. Whitacre, former member of the
Senate of West Virginia Senate, farmer, educator and distinguished West
Virginian; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to the family of the late Honorable
Vernon C. Whitacre.
